San Juan River Fly Fishing Near Pagosa Springs
The San Juan River rises in the Weminuche Wilderness, runs straight through the middle of Pagosa Springs, and eventually joins the Colorado. Very few towns have a trout river through their downtown; fewer still have one with a hot spring on the bank.
In Town
The stretch through Pagosa Springs has been improved with in-stream structures — pools, drops and holding water — and is walk-and-wade accessible from town. Colorado Parks and Wildlife manages sections of it under special regulations, so check current rules on gear and limits before fishing. In high summer the same water fills with tubes and children, which tells you something honest about how the town uses it.
The Tailwater
The San Juan below Navajo Dam, over the New Mexico line, is one of the best known tailwater fisheries in the American West — a Quality Water stretch with year-round cold releases, enormous fish densities and the sort of technical midge and larvae fishing that people plan trips around. It is a comfortable drive south from Pagosa Springs, and it fishes when everything at altitude is frozen.

Seasons, Roughly
Runoff generally blows the freestone water out from late spring into early summer; things clear and settle through summer; autumn is the best of it, with cool water, fewer people and aspen turning. Winter fishing means the tailwater. Hatches and timing shift year to year with snowpack — ask a local fly shop the week you arrive rather than trusting any website, including this one.
